What Happens When You Start In-Home Care?

Beginning in-home care is easier when the process is broken into manageable questions. You do not need a perfect care plan before making the first call. You do need a clear picture of what is difficult today and what would make life easier.

Step 1: Identify the Most Important Needs

Make a short list of activities that are challenging, such as bathing, dressing, preparing for the day, staying connected, or giving a family caregiver a break. Note when those needs occur.

Step 2: Share Preferences and Routines

Discuss the person’s preferred schedule, daily habits, communication style, and any concerns about accepting help. Their preferences should shape the conversation.

Step 3: Discuss the Service Plan

Ask which tasks are included, what kind of caregiver assistance is appropriate, and how the proposed schedule would work. Clarify any tasks that fall outside nonmedical home care.

Step 4: Review Payment Before Care Begins

Ask about hourly rates, scheduling terms, and what insurance or other benefits may or may not cover. If dementia is involved, ask separately whether GUIDE screening is appropriate.

Step 5: Revisit the Plan as Needs Change

Care needs can change. Families should know whom to contact about concerns, schedule changes, or additional assistance.
