Home Care vs. Home Health Care
Home care and home health care sound similar, but they are not interchangeable. Understanding the difference can help families avoid confusion about services, medical orders, and insurance coverage.
What Home Care Means
Nonmedical home care supports daily living. It may include bathing, dressing, companionship, meal-related routines, and other practical assistance based on the care plan.
What Home Health Care Means
Home health care generally involves clinical services such as skilled nursing or therapy delivered under a medical plan and applicable eligibility rules. These services are different from ongoing hourly help with everyday tasks.
Can Someone Need Both?
Yes. A person may have a clinical need that calls for home health while also needing practical help with dressing, meals, or companionship. Ask each provider to explain its responsibilities.
How Coverage Differs
Insurance rules for skilled home health and routine nonmedical home care are not the same. Medicare does not generally pay for ongoing custodial assistance simply because a person needs help at home. Coverage must be checked against the actual benefit and care plan.
Questions to Ask
Is the service medical or nonmedical? Who provides it? Is a clinician’s order required? How many visits or hours are included? What costs will the family pay?

Original Medicare does not cover 24-hour-a-day care at home or custodial/personal care when that is the only care needed. Medicare Advantage benefits vary by plan, so any supplemental in-home support benefit should be confirmed with the specific plan.
No. Hospice is a separate model of care with its own clinical eligibility and benefit rules.
