Respite Care for Family Caregivers
Family caregiving can be meaningful and exhausting at the same time. Even a devoted caregiver needs time for appointments, work, family responsibilities, and rest. Respite care at home is planned support that allows someone else to help for a period of time.
What Is Respite Care?
Respite care is temporary or scheduled assistance that gives a regular caregiver a break. It may involve help with personal routines, companionship, and other everyday tasks, depending on the care plan.
You Do Not Need to Be in Crisis
Caregivers often wait until they feel overwhelmed. Planning relief earlier can make routines more sustainable and create time to handle other responsibilities.
Examples of When Respite May Help
You may need a few hours to attend appointments, time to manage work or family commitments, or recurring help during a particularly demanding part of the week. Start by identifying when caregiving responsibilities are hardest to manage.
Standard Respite Care and GUIDE Respite Are Different
Standard non-medical respite is often arranged as hourly home care and may be privately paid. The Medicare GUIDE Program has a separate respite benefit for certain eligible people living with moderate to severe dementia who have an unpaid caregiver. The benefit is not available to everyone who requests home care.
Ask About Dementia Caregiver Support
If your loved one is over age 65, has dementia or memory concerns, has Original/Traditional Medicare (Parts A & B), not Medicare Advantage or another managed-care plan, and lives at home or in independent living, ask whether LoveWell’s PocketRN pathway may be worth exploring. Screening does not guarantee enrollment or respite benefits.
